Our Cancer Research Wish List
Over the next 12 months we need to raise over £1 million to support cancer research at Weston Park Hospital. As well as ensuring a better future any help you will give will also bring avantages to patients being treated right here, right now. That's not only at Weston Park Hospital but also at our regions general hospitals in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop and Chesterfield.
 - Cancer Research Centre - £270,000 -
each year the Weston Park Cancer Research Centre looks to the Cancer Appeal for this 'core' funding which enables thousands of patients from around the region to take part in clinical trials. These trials bring benefits of allowing patients access to the latest drugs an treatments plus the additional close care and attention that participating in a clinical trial requires. Melanoma Research - £42,000 - This is laborotory based research looking at the genes responsible for this often agressive skin cancer. It is hoped to ientify why an who gets it and why the incidence of melanoma is increasing. Colorectal Cancer Research Equipment - £92,750 -bowel cancer is one of the leading causes in cancer deaths in the UK. With this new equipment, developed in Japan, an only being teste in one other european centre, we hope to revolutionise the early detection of tumours in the colon and so save many lives. Survive and Thrive- £130,000 -each year. This is also pioneering research which puts Sheffield at the leading edge of world cancer research. This major project has been running for many years tracking childhood survivors of cancer into their adult lives to monitor and provide better care systems to meet the ongoing needs which have occurred because of their cancer treatment. Cancer Research Nurse - £26,000 - top provide an 'extra' nurse in the Weston Park Cancer Research Centre which in turn allows 'extra' places for patients to take part in clinical research trials and so benefit from the recognised advntanges participation brings. Image Guided Radiotherapy (On-Board Imager) System - £340,000 - effectively a pair of x-ray eyes for a raiotherapy treatment machine. This is of great benefit to patients with tumours that move. The main 'moving' tumours are those in the prostate and in the lungs but this equipment is likely to be beneficial to many more. Breast Cancer Progression Research - £72,207 - our world leading researchers are working in the laborotory to identify the genes which cause aggressive forms of breast cancer in the hope that a clearer understanding will lead to a cure. These are just some of the cancer research projects we are currently raising money to fund. Most of the cancer research grants allowed by the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal are for projects which usually run from between a 1 and 3 year time span. Before project or equipment grants are allocated by the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal they undergo a rigerous scrutiny and approval protocol to ensure they are valid, worthwhile an properly focussed to fit with practices and standards at Weston Park Hospital and the wider cancer research community in the UK and the world. If you would like to know more about our grant approval proceedures, please contact us at the Cancer Appeal Office. These are only a sample of the research projects we are currently fundraising for. Please see our Current Projects list for a fuller view of all the research projects we are funding - on your behalf.
