A 'Big' Day for Volunteer Joan

Patients, staff and volunteers at the hospital turned out to help dedicated volunteeer Joan Longmire celebrate a 'big' birthday.

Joan with Lyndsey and Eunice

You may have seen Joan (centre) in and around Weston Park Hospital, the Cancer Support Centre or the Cancer Appeal Offices where she has been volunteering for many years.

Joan, together with Eunice Plews (right) is regularly found with a sympathetic ear, kind words of advice and some wonderful tips when helping patients deal with hair loss as part of the invaluable Headways service at the hospital.

If you take part in our Think Pink sponsored walk you'll no doubt have met Joan as she registers people in and makes sure they are back safe and sound. At Cancer Appeal fundraising events Joan is often found with a collection bucket which she shakes like a professional.

But if you have set foot in Weston Park Hospital over the past year you will have noticed our brightly coloured whimsical little 'dammit dolls' which are selling like hot cakes and which have come from the clever brains and nimble fingers of Joan and Eunice. Together they have raised many thousands of pounds to help our patients through this alone.

We were proud to be invited to help celebrate Joan's special birthday at a party at the Cancer Support Centre. All of us at the Cancer Appeal wish her very many happy returns and thank her for all the hours and hours of selfless effort she puts into making other's lives that bit better.
