Mountain Bike champ presents £9,800 to Weston Park Hospital

World champion downhill mountain biker Steve Peat took time out of his busy international schedule to drop into Weston Park Hospital to present a cheque for nearly £9,800 raised at last summers Wharncliffe Weekender; a mountain biking event held annually in North Sheffield.

The two day off road biking extravaganza saw more than 120 people, aged from 10 years old to nearly 60, pedalling through Wharncliffe Woods, both competitively and for fun, often in fancy dress. No one got to race the world champ at the time though. A dislocated ankle meant he was left to commentate and entertain spectators who turned up in their hundreds.

Now back on his feet Steve, along with friends and fellow Wharncliffe Weekender organisers Wendy Duggan, Andrew Hardman and Max Feetham presented the cheque to the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal. He took time out to thank everyone who had taken part and helped with the fundraising.

“The event last summer was a huge success, and I think everyone had a great fun” says Steve. “This is the second year we have put on the Wharncliffe Weekender and we had double the number of and nearly doubled the amount that was raised. Thanks to everyone who came along and either raced or just visited, camped or enjoyed the music and fireworks,” said Steve.

“Weston Park Hospital is very close to our hearts as all the events team have had family members treated there over the years. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank you for your support.”

It was a quick visit home to Sheffield for the champ who is now in California, USA on training camps ahead of the first round of the UCI Downhill Series competition which starts in Spain on 10th of May.

Look out for news of this year’s Wharncliffe Weekender which will take place on July 12/13th.
